The concept of a trail connecting all the way across Canada was created in 1992 on Canada's 125th anniversary, with the goal of completing the trail by the 150th anniversary in 2017. When complete, the Trans Canada Trail will be approximately 24000 kilometres long and 80% of Canadians will live within 30 minutes of the trail. As of November 2016, the trail is 90% complete and has over 21000 kilometres of usable trail.

The western terminus of the Trans Canada Trail was created in 2004 as part of the construction of the Cowichan Valley Trail, with the kiosk in Lake Cowichan being dedicated on May 22, 2004. Since then, approximately 178 kilometres of usable trail have been completed on Vancouver Island, with the remaining 53 kilometres of connecting trail expected to be completed in time to meet the planned July 1, 2017 goal.

A renovation of two kilometres of the trail and the western terminus was completed in May 2016.
