The recreation ground and entrance is dedicated to the men and unusually the women of the village who took part in the Great War. The annual bonfire and fireworks celebrating Guy Fawkes are held here.

There are two slate plaques beside the gateway. One reads:
"THESE GATES COMMEMORATE
THE END OF THE GREAT
WAR 1914-1918 AND THE
MEN AND WOMEN OF
STAVELEY WHO HELPED
THEIR COUNTRY TO
VICTORY "
The other reads:
"THE LAND
WAS PURCHASED
BY SUBSCRIPTION
IN 1922 TO BE A
RECREATION GROUND
FOR THE PEOPLE OF
STAVELEY"
