This is at a bridge across an inlet to Cayuga Lake. It was at a harbor at the southern end of Cayuga Lake which could reach the Erie Canal at the northern end.
"Ithaca has been a canal port since 1828, when the Cayuga-Seneca canal connected the two largest Finger Lakes to the Erie Canal. Steamboats towed canal boats - no mules required... Once connected to the canal system, Ithaca's trade increased dramatically and boasted the local production of lumber, wheat and whiskey. Boatyards and lumberyards lined Ithaca's inlet, along with services for the travelers passing through town."
