Ancient Indian fortress pre-dating the arrival of Columbus and pre-Aricara, this large 50 acre fortress has many features still viewable on the Missouri River bluffs east of Pierre. The military genius of the Native American's is on display here. The bastion and enfilading fire are considered inventions of the White Man, but White Man influence in the design is considered highly remote. This great fortress is one of the marvels of pre-historic America. Within these palisades were many Native American homes capable of sheltering over 5,000 people, abundance of water, deep moats, and watch guard fire points, the remains of which can still be seen today.
