The early Gothic castle recorded in 1234 is in the place of a fortified settlement from the first millennium B. C. During the Thirty Years War it served as a fortress, it was conquered only in 1622. It was abandoned from the middle of the 17th cent, it was restored in the second half of the 19th cent The palace with unique arcade gallery is scarce. The castle is dominated by the steeple tower Hláska (Watch-tower) and by the entrance tower. The interiors house an exhibition of history of the castle and the Czech republic.

Rane gotický hrad pripomínaný r. 1234 je na míste hradište z 1. tisíciletí pr. n. I. Zbudován byl za krále Václava I., dostaven za Premysla Otakara II. Pro svou výhodnou polohu na vysokém ostrohu nad soutokem Vltavy a Otavy nebyl dobyt husity. Za tricetileté války sloužil jako pevnost, dobyt byl až r. 1622. Od poloviny 17. stol. pustnul, restaurován byl v 2. pol. 19. stol. Dochována je nejstarší Hlízová vež, palác s ojedinelým arkádovým ochozem, svatební síní a kaplí s gotickým oltárem a nástennými malbami. Dominantou hradu je vež Hláska s britem a vstupní vež. V interiérech je expozice k historii hradu a Ceského státu.
