Eagle Scouts take on project at Henley
When deciding what to do for his Eagle Scout project, 16-year-old Jacob Elwood saw the answer in front of him.
Elwood, a member of the Henley High School tennis team, and his coach Dee Hahn noted athletes had no place to sit down between matches at the school's brand new tennis courts.
"Some kids like to sit down and take time to regroup," sHahn said. "They couldn't really sit down. They had to stand."
So Elwood decided to build a place for them to site down, then built eight benches.
"They're beautiful," Jack Lee, the school's principal, said. "They're going to be much appreciated by everybody who uses them."
Elwood said it took him four days to build the benches. He received donated materials from Parr Lumber, Diamond Home Improvement Center and Home Depot.
He used Trex decking material for the benches.
"It's a composite of wood and plastic so it lasts longer," Elwood said. "It's more durable in the winter, rain and snow and ultimately more conformable than just sitting on the plain wood."
Elwood credited his grandfather Phill Doddridge with helping him complete the project. "He was my mentor in this and really helped me out," Elwood said. "He guided me, gave me adviceon what I needed help on."
