A life-size steel sculpture of a Texas Longhorn is located at the front entrance of Sul Ross State University ("SRSU") in Alpine, Texas.
Weighing a whopping 4,000 lbs, the sculpture -- called "Old Maverick" -- was created by Harold Johnson Nichols. Mr. Nichols was born in Alpine and went to SRSU prior to moving to Victoria for business. He donated "Old Maverick", his largest creation ever, to his Alma Mater in 1991.
The statue originally stood at the entrance of the Museum of the Big Bend; the museum has moved since then, but the statue was kept "as is" at its current location -- close to the main road, for all to admire when driving by the university's campus.
Every year, the statue is wrapped in silver and red -- the college's colors -- during Homecoming.
The statue is inventoried in the Library of Congress: (
