The Parish Church is probably the oldest structure in Raglan village. It stands in the centre of the village where the four main roads connect. St Cadoc’s Church was founded in the 14th Century on an earlier 6th Century site. The charm of the
church lies in its perfect barrel roof, well-proportioned stonework and the east
window depicting the Gospels. In 1704, the Beauforts added the north Chapel
where many of the Somerset family lie, from the 3rd Earl of Worcester in 1589
down to the 3rd son of the 2nd Duke of Beaufort. A notice commemorates the
visit in 1946 of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, “to the scene and last
resting place of Edward Somerset, 3rd Marquis of Worcester who gave to the world the first practical steam engine.” His early experiments were carried out in the Great Tower of the castle.
