In Whitehall, at the canal lock that connects Lake Champlain with Champlain Canal, is this elevation sign displaying two elevations - depending on what water body you are in.
The sign is at about the middle of the lock on the other side from the viewing area. There is a New York Canal flag/flagpole next to it.
The sign states the following about elevation:
"UPSTREAM ELEVATION 112 feet
DOWNSTREAM ELEVATION 96.5 feet
LIFT 15.5 feet"
The Champlain Canal links Lake Champlain with the Hudson River and is part of the Erie Heritage Canalway. This canal once had commercial traffic on it but is now primarily used for pleasure craft. At the time of visit, we saw one boat go through the lock.
Location: At the lock in the center of Whitehall, across the canal from viewing area.
