This site has a long history with the "written word." On April 7, 1883, the first issue of the Orange Ridge Echo was printed here in a wood-frame building. This paper later became the Chronicle, which eventually became the Volusia County Record, published here from 1905 to 1921. A June 17, 1905 article describes the current building being constructed with brick from Lake Helen. From 1922 to 1929 The Sun Publishing Co. occupied the building, printing the DeLand Sun. Unique features here include the massive front windows that open on pulleys and a window frame that still bears the marks where a laborer kept track of his wages.
