Noch bevor der Pulverturm ein Teil der Stadtmauer wurde, war er Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts ein sogenannter Freiturm, der Turm des Freihofes von Geithain. Im Freihof wohnte der landesherrliche Vogt, dem das Gerichtswesen unterstand.
Ab Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts war Geitahin eine Garnisionsstadt im Kurfürstentum Sachsen. Zu dieser Zeit wurde das benachbarte Gebäude des Turmes als Versorgungsmagazin genutzt. Im Turm selbst wurden wahrscheinlich ebenfalls Kanonenkugeln und Pulver gelagert, wodurch dieser seinen bis heute bestehenden Namen erhielt.
Der Pulverturm gehört zur deutschen Denkmalliste und ist als Wahrzeichen der Stadt Geithain sogar auf dem Stadtwappen verewigt.

Even before the Pulverturm became a part of the city wall, it was a so-called Freiturm, the tower of the Freihof of Geithain, in the middle of the 14th century. Inside the Freihof lived the sovereign Vogt (the judge).
From the end of the 17th century, Geitahin was a garrison town in the Electorate of Saxony. At this time, the adjacent building of the tower was used as a supply magazine. In the tower itself, cannon balls and powder were probably stored, which gave it its present name.
The Pulverturm belongs to the German Monument Registers and is a symbol of the city of Geithain even on the town's coat of arms.
