The present-day baroque looks of the chateau was forerun by a medieval fortress situated in the northwestern corner of today’s building. The Hrobcic family who got the estate from the Svamberks in 1560 lived in Manetin unlike previous owners. The town became the centre of the independent estate. Under Jeronym Hrobcicky Jr. of Hrobcice (+1604), shortly before 1600, the castle was enlarged and reconstructed into a chateau. The estate occupied a larger part of the ground area of nowadays chateau grounds including the park.

Na míste dnešní zámku stál ve stredoveku pravdepodobne gotický hrad, který v 16. století nechali tehdejší majitelé panství pánové z Hrobcic prestavet na renesancní zámek. Hrad už v té dobe byl zríceninou a pro stavbu zámku byly využity jen prízemní klenuté místnosti. Dnešní barokní podobu získal manetínský zámek v roce 1712 za Lažanských z Bukové. Manetín predtím postihl velký požár a prestavba zámku byla vlastne nutností. Podle návrhu G.B.Santiniho vznikla patrová obdélná budova. Lažanští z Bukové vlastnili manetínský zámek v letech 1621-1945, kdy jim byl zkonfiskován.
