In North Adams, along Church Street, is a building, currently the local Masonic Hall, that is claimed to be haunted.

The building is located where Church Street and Pleasant Street intersect, on the north side of the road.

The house is 2 1/2 story high wood-clapboard structure. The building also has an overhang on the left side where there is a driveway. There is a large addition off the back, which is visible from Pleasant Street.

There were a couple signs by the door. One was for a Crafts Fair. The other was a hand written sign that advertised personal ghost tours.

The home was originally used by the Houghton family. A. C. Houghton was a prominent figure in North Adams and was a former Mayor. The main story is that the daughter was being driven by the Chauffeur near the village of Pownell, VT, on August 1, 1914. As they were going uphill, the encountered a construction crew and that forced them to go on the shoulder. The shoulder gave way, and the car tumbled. The daughter died in the crash. The Chauffeur survived but later committed suicide. A. C. Houghton, later, suffered a stroke and died about three years after the accident.

Since then, reports of paranormal happenings have been reported. Footsteps have been heard regularly on the third floor stairs as well as a cold breeze, as if the Chauffeur had just passed by. In the basement are reports of a ghost of a girl. It is not believed that she was part of the family - perhaps she belonged to the house that was in place previous to the present building.

Two well known TV shows, Ghost Hunters, and Ghost Adventurers, had paid a visit.

The tragic story is in the Wikipedia article, so it is true.
