The foundation stone for Government House was laid in 1859, but due to a shortage of materials and labour the building wasn't finished until 1864. The Victorian Tudor style building is set in 3.2 hectares of gardens and is open to the public on several occasions during the year. Perth's Government House is the only Governor's residence in permanent use in all the states of Australia.
The foundation stone is interesting as it was laid by a Mason and not the Governor of the day, also next to the plaque is the Masonic symbol carved in the stone
