"In August of 1987, the structure of the company was changed to that of a not-for-profit consortium sponsored by St. Louis' three adult trauma centers (Barnes Hospital, St. John's Mercy Medical Center, and St. Louis University Medical Center). The name "ARCH" (Area Rescue Consortium of Hospitals) was selected to identify the cooperative effort.

"In April 2000, ARCH was acquired by Air Methods Corporation located in Englewood, Colo. ARCH is widely recognized as one of the finest air medical transport programs in the country. In order to maintain recognition, the name “ARCH" (Area Rescue Consortium of Hospitals) was officially changed to ARCH Air Medical Service. The service now operates as a for-profit independent provider continuing to serve all hospitals within its region" ~ ARCH Medical Services
