This beautiful gorge of the Tamina River is located near Bad Ragaz in Switzerland.
In the gorge of Tamina River a clear succession is seen through Oxfordian, Neocomian and Upper Cretaceous rocks. Lithologically, main rocks in this geoloigcal formation are Nummulit limestone (which is harder rock) and sea shale (which is softer rock).
Oxfordian age is the oldest age of Upper Jurassic (157.3-163.5 millions of years), Neocomian is the oldest age of Lower Cretaceous (139.8-145.0 millions of years) and Upper or Late Cretaceous is younger epoch within Cretaceous and spans 66.0-100.5 millions of years.
Nummulit limestone is limestone rock where Nummulite fossils were the main building blocks of rock. A Nummulite is a large lenticular fossil, characterized by its numerous coils, subdivided by septa into chambers. They are the shells of the fossil and present-day marine protozoan Nummulites, a type of foraminiferan. Nummulites commonly vary in diameter from 1.3 cm to 5 cm. Shale is a fine-grained, clastic sedimentary rock composed of mud that is a mix of flakes of clay minerals and tiny fragments of other minerals, especially quartz and calcite. Shale is characterized by breaks along thin laminae or parallel layering or bedding less than one centimeter in thickness, called fissility.
