Little is known of its early history but the base of the tower was thought to be built about AD710 after Nechtan, King of the Picts sent masons to build it in the Roman manner. The rest of the structure dates from the beginning of the 12th century onwards with the building last in use as a Parish church in 1591. Today, it is in ruins apart from the tower, and is managed by Historic Scotland. It is situated about a mile east of Forfar on the B9113 Montrose Road.
