This memorial is located along the north side of the sanctuary of the Bath Abbey.
The tombstone is beautifully carved from a slab of marble, with a clear Navy theme in its reliefs. What appear to be the arms of a Navy anchor behind the plaque, is actually the prow and keel of a steam sloop! The relief details on this memorial are truly exceptional.
The memorial reads as follows:
"Sacred to the memory of
MATTHEW CONNOLLY
Capt., Royal Navy.
Who died 7 February 1833
in his 77th year.
He was a dutiful son, and affectionate brother, and a strictly honest man."
