This small memorial to the memory of a young local Army Officer killed in Mesopotamia and buried in a mass grave with other fallen comrades catches the eye because of its unisual green marble base.
The memorial reads as follows:
"[Greater love hath no man than this
Seal of 69th Punjabis
Faithful Unto Death]
In sacred and loving memory of
AUBREY S T REILLY
Capt. 69th Punjabis
Attached 92nd Punjabis
Youngest son of Major J.M.T. and Francis Isabel Reilly
Who fell on February 22, 1917 at Sunniyat, Mesopotamia while gallantly leading his company and was buried the following day in the Trench Cemetery Sunniyat
Aged 23 years"
Mesopotamia is better known now as Iraq. See here for more on the Mesopotamian Front during WWI: (
