This thatched cottage in the village of Hale was the the home of local giant, reputed to be 9 feet 3 inches tall, and who lived between 1578 and 1623.

John Middleton (1578–1623) was an English giant commonly known as the Childe of Hale. Most of what is known about him is based on oral tradition and legends. Legend tells that he slept with his feet out of the window of his small house. Tales also credit him with great strength.

The gable end of the house has a plaque placed by Halton Borough Council, confirming that John Middleton did live in the house. These days the cottage is rented out as a holiday home.
