This scenic 11 km road connects 11 islands that were left behind with the intentional flooding of the St. Lawrence River in the 1950s. The flooding was a consequence of creating the St. Lawrence Seaway, now a navigable route for oceangoing ships that want to access Great Lakes ports in both Canada and the United States.
The history is very interesting. Several villages once stood where the river now lies. This story is captured at the Lost Villages display on Macdonell Island and in other locations in the region.
Today there are beaches and long stretches of parkland to enjoy. Lock 21 is a great scuba diving spot and there are three campgrounds to stay at.
The Parkway is managed by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, an agency of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
