The approximately 2000 Berlin public hand pumps are able to serve the network-independent emergency supply of the population with drinking water and fire water. (This was especially important at the time when West Berlin had been isolated.) The water is conveyed from the near-surface groundwater. Some of the pumps are still working - this is one of them.
