The elevation sign is a plain, standard green highway sign like so many in the Southwest. The welcome sign is more interesting. Utah is proud of Lake Powell, and it features on this sign, with beautiful red rock formations in the blue lake, with occasional green foliage.
The Utah Office of Tourism notes that Utah is built on a foundation of rock, literally and figuratively, noting the prominence of red sandstone throughout the state. The "Life Elevated" logo evokes these red rock formations, which are "strong, bold, and rising up from solid footings." Depending upon where one enters the state, the welcome signs will change, depending on which notable feature -- there are seven -- is closest.
