The Dhrontalsperre in the valley of the small Dhron at Heidenburg and Leiwen in Rhineland-Palatinate was from 1911 to 1913 for obtaining electric power from the Stadtwerke Trier built.
The water was to the Mosel in Leiwen passed and there was electricity from turbines in hydroelectric power generated. 1954/1956 was extended to Pumpspeicherwerk (Dhronkraftwerk Leiwen), which pumps up water at night and during the day produces electricity. The pump was disassembled in 1995, since then only the natural intake of the small Dhron was used as the driving water. The operator is the RWE Power AG .
The shut-off building of Dhrontalsperre is a gravity dam from break stone with curved floor plan. It is a dam after intze principle and also has a Intze wedge. The dam has been renovated from 2005 to 2006 and has a patrol with associated drainage and an underground seal ( sealing veil obtained).
