In one of the most important squares of the city there is a monument to José Rodrigues Maio, known as Blind of Maio, and several clubs and associations have him as their patron. Because of this those associations place plaques in the monument pedestal to commemorate special dates.

This plaque reads:
quote:

A Casa dos Poveiros no Rio de Janeiro no XXV aniversário ao seu patrono Cego do maio 1930-1955

The House of Poveiros in Rio de Janeiro on the XXV anniversary tribute to its patron Cego do maio 1930-1955

Casa dos Poveiros no Rio de Janeiro
"The idea of ??creating a "House of Poveiros" was born in 1929 in Taylor married John Figueiras. At first believed in creating pro-Varzim groups, as was the case in Manaus, linking poveiros groups scattered in the states of Brazil. It would be a way to unite the colonies poveiras and advertise their land in the country where the thrush sings. Given its immensity and difficulty of contact; poveiros residents in the most remote villages of the neighboring country, the idea miscarried. At the time, was big emigration movement to Brazil. New people in search of the tree patacas; fleeing a country without a future, drowned in sorrow, unemployment and poor living conditions.

In this avalanche of young poveiros immigrants, seethed urn healthy sports rivalry between Varzim and Sporting Clube da Povoa. Two clubs that brought glued to the heart. Accustomed to live happily with their defeats and victories, they could not vent the clubista fervor for lack of living spaces. This swarm of lost and-win was "dumped" sporadically in any corner or; table of a tavern around a "Chope" geladinho. I knew the little sharpen this language. I had to run into a certain place to speak of Varzim, friends and clubs. In a word, it lacked its own headquarters to kill miss. On the other hand, the case of repatriation of fishermen poveiros shocked the young emigrant colony. If many fishermen returned to Povoa not to naturalize, others there were "vegetating" the squares with economic difficulties. It was urgently needed an institution that made them register and them it were their concerns and needs. These two items - a local forest-miss and an institution that zelasse the less fortunate fishermen - were the fuse to create the "House of Poveiros in Rio de Janeiro."
