This Whispering Giant sits high above the river valley and the highway Illinois Route 29. From Rte. 29, a switchback road leads up to the carving and the entrace to Hopewell. The Village of Hopewell was built in the early 70s as a rurual community named Hopewell Estates. The estates are 4 miles north of the City of Chillicothe and 5 miles south of the town of Sparland. At the time Hopewell Estates was established, this road was the only way in or out. In the 80s, Hopewell Estates was granted village status. As of the 2000 census, Hopewell had a population of 396 in 140 households.
The carving looks northwardly out over the Illinois River valley.
