The Angel Inn was originally owned by several generations of a family called Cleminshaw. The Cleminshaws arrived at the Angel shortly after the start of mail coaches. The Angel was a hub for passing mail coaches, principally those from Leeds to other northern cities. The local Post Office was originally based at the Angel. As the coaching trade grew the stabling at the Angel, already capable of stabling 100 horses, became inadequate and further stabling was had further up the road near the Swan and Talbot Inn. There was great competition between the Angel and the Swan and Talbot.
After the decline in the coaching trade the Angel was purchased by Mr Henry Crossley, who converted some of the stables into a printing works. Part of the Inn below the passage was redeveloped into what was known as the Market Room, where the local magistrates held their court.
The plaque reads
THE ANGEL INN
The Angel became an important coaching inn between 1760 and 1840 with stabling for over 100 horses. It had its own smithy and shoeing shop to deal with the forty pairs of horses kept here for posting purposes. In 1837 it served two mail coaches daily between London and Glasgow and between Hull and Manchester.
