EN: The small village of Gondo is located south of the Simplon Pass, right on the border with Italy, in a narrow gorge. Until October 2000, the municipality, which mainly lives from trade and transit traffic, was hardly known. But on October 14, after several days of heavy rain, a part of the slope broke loose and hit the village center. One third of the buildings were destroyed and thirteen of the 160 inhabitants lost their lives. The village had to be rebuilt and was newly inaugurated on October 14, 2004. Since the disaster, the exodus has increased, today only about 80 people live in the remote village, the school had to be closed in 2007.

In the village center, where the catastrophe had occurred, stand a memorial stone, donated by the neighboring Italian province. The bell, which is hanging next to it in a small canal, rings on the every 14th of October to commemorate the landslide.

DE: Das kleine Dorf Gondo liegt südlich des Simplonpasses direkt an der Grenze zu Italien in einer engen Schlucht. Bis im Oktober 2000 war die Gemeinde, die vor allem vom Handel und Transitverkehr lebt kaum weiter bekannt, aber am 14. Oktober löste sich nach mehrtägigem starken Regen ein Teil des Hanges und traf den Dorfkern. Ein Drittel der Gebäude wurden zerstört und dreizehm der ungefähr 160 Einwohner verloren ihr Leben. Das Dorf musste wieder neu aufgebaut werden und wurde am 14. Oktober 2004 neu eigeweiht. Seit der Katastrophe hat sich die Abwanderung verstärkt, heute leben nur noch etwa 80 Personen in dem abgelegenen Dorf, die Schule musste 2007 geschlossen werden.

Im Dorfzentrum, wo sich die Katastrophe ereignet hatte steht ein Gedenkstein, der von der italienischen Nachbarprovinz gestiftet wurde. Die Glocke, die daneben über einem kleinen Kanal hängt, läutet jährich am 14. Oktober zum Gedenken an den Erdrutsch.
