Mülheim is one of the oldest Protestant church communities in the Rhineland and was part of the county Veldenz. In the 16th century the Velden counts promoted the Reformation in their territories. After 1815, the evangelical Christians arrived in the localities of the surrounding area, which until today are predominantly Catholic. Today, the Lutheran-influenced church community of Mülheim has 1,400 members of the congregation, 450 of them in the Catholic communities.
