Angel Oak is estimated to be 1,400 years old - perhaps the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi River. To protect the tree, Lowcountry Open Land Trust announced they now officially own the 17 acres adjacent to Angel Oak Park.

In just over eight months, the non-profit organization was able to raise the $3.6 million needed to purchase the land. County Greenbelt and Charleston County Council provided the initial $2.4 million. More than 10,000 community members raised the rest of the funds to buy 17 acres and protect it from being developed.
