In Whitehall's downtown section is the Main Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The district encompasses a long row, with three blocks of buildings facing the Champlain Canal. About 40 buildings are included.
There is a sign along the road, just north of the intersection with the road that crosses the canal via a bridge. The buildings are mostly brick and stone between two and three stories tall. They were built between 1865 and 1900, after a fire.
