The area from 5th and 9th Avenues and between 34th and 42nd Streets was once known throughout the world as the Garment District. As the original businesses close the area is redefining itself as the Fashion District. In the heart of the Fashion District, on the northeast corner of Seventh Avenue and 39th Street, is located the Garment Worker statue.
A 6.5' by 4' by 4' bronze sculpture of a garment worker is placed on a 1' high black marble base. The bronze sculpture was dedicated on October 10, 1984. It was created by Judith Weller and cast at the Modern Art Foundry. The base was carved by A. Oltavino.
An older man is sitting bent over a manual sewing machine. His feet are working a treadle and he is wearing work clothes and a skull cap. His arms rest on the sewing machine table while he is working on a garment.
A plaque on the front of base is inscribed:
"THE GARMENT WORKER" BY JUDITH WELLER
IS DONATED TO THE CITY OF NEW YORK
