Sanary-sur-Mer is a genuine fishing port and village, situated in the heart of Provence. It is reputedly one of the French Mediterranean coasts' most typical and authentic fishing port.

This very ancient natural harbour, set in the heart of the town, is permanent home to around 100 heritage vessels dating back as far as 1895, among them, some old Provencal fishing boats locally known as "pointu" (sharp boats : so-named for their pointed bows and sterns).
Sanary has its own fleet of fishermen since time immemorial. Twelve professional fishermen continue to sell their daily catch every day on the harbor.

Sanary a toujours abrité une flottille de pêcheurs et des activités maritimes, rassemblés autour de la prud’homie. En 1661, 27 patrons pêcheurs obtiennent l’autorisation de créer la confrérie de St Pierre jusqu’en 1792, où les prud’homies sont crées. Sa juridiction s’étend aux communes de Bandol, Sanary et Six-Fours et comprend le territoire de pêche, qui s’étend du Cap Sicié jusqu’à l’Ile Rousse. Les prud’hommes élus ont un pouvoir judiciaire sous la direction des affaires maritimes, ils régulent les conflits et gèrent les territoires et les ressources. Douze pêcheurs sont encore en activité. Avec une dizaine d’anciens professionnels, aujourd’hui à la retraite, ils ramènent quotidiennement leurs poissons qu’ils vendent sur le port.
