DE: Der Bleibergbau in Kärnten ist Jahrtausende alt (hallstattzeitliche Bleifiguren von Frög bei Rosegg - ca. 600 - 700
v.Chr.). Im Bereich des Hochobir und der Petzen enthalten sowohl die obersten (hangenden) Abschnitte des Wettersteinkalkes als auch die nächstjüngeren karnischen Cardita-Schichten Blei- und Zinkerze.
Die ältesten Hinweise auf eine Bergbautätigkeit im Hochobir finden sich möglicherweise in einer Urkunde aus dem Jahre 1171 (Bestätigung der Bergrechte durch Papst Alexander III. an die Propstei Seckau); dabei ist es freilich nicht gewiss, ob sich diese Nachricht tatsächlich auf das Obir- oder auf das Petzenmassiv bzw. gar auf
ein anderes Erzvorkommen im Vellachtal bezieht.
Nach den großen Aufschließungserfolgen des Bergbaues auf der Südseite des Petzenmassivs wurden ab etwa 1900 die Abbaue am Obir immer stärker eingeschränkt. Maßgebend war neben den geringen Erträgen der meisten Gruben vor allem auch der schwierige Abtransport der Erze aus den hochgelegenen Gruben, der z.T. in Säcken im "Sackzug" oder mittels Hörndlschlitten erfolgen musste.
