The 'Heckscher' monument in Sleen was established in memory of the perished Jewish family Heckscher from Sleen and all the victims of the Holocaust.

At the beginning of World War II, the Heckscher family was the only Jewish family in Sleen. They were living up to October 1942 to Menso Altingstraat 16 in Sleen. The family consisted of father Izaac, mother Elsiena and two sons Meijer and Rolf. The sons have become 11 and 7 years old. The family had a drapery shop in Sleen. Father Izaac was active in the korfball club, motorcycle club and the music and drama and was known for his special sense of humor. Son Meijer (called Meini) was in the public school in Sleen, the youngest son Rolf was too young for this.

When the threat of deportation was increasing is hiding the family. This, however, could not avoid being discovered and from Westerbork on January 25 were put on transport. On January 28, 1944 mother Elsiena and the two sons Rolf and Meijer died in Auschwitz. Father Izaac died on March 31, 1945 in Kdo Mühldorf.

The creation of the monument was an initiative of the temporary working group Joods Monument Foundation and Stichting Streekeigen Sleen. It was discovered that there was no monument to the Jewish family and the Holocaust in Sleen. The municipality of Coevorden made a financial contribution.

The text on the memorial reads:
