For arrivals just in Trier host the Porta Nigra is the most advantageous starting point for exploring the city. The Porta Nigra is the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps - an incomparable connection between the ancient past and today's modern city.

The Porta Nigra itself comes from a time (about 180 n. Chr.), When the Romans public buildings like from large blocks (the greatest problems identified here are six tons) built. The sandstone blocks from nearby Kylltal were of mill driven bronze saws cut (some saw marks are still visible) and placed on one another without mortar. However, one association per two stones horizontally by iron clamps that have been poured into lead. Such clip is still visible inside the door near the eastern spiral staircase; Rust many former brackets can still be seen outside, because in the Middle Ages chiseled one deep holes to steal the metal and melt down.

The stone blocks escaped the fate recycling because after 1028 the Greek monk Simeon was walled up as a hermit in the East Tower of Porta Nigra. After his death in 1035 he was buried and canonized on the ground floor. In his honor, Archbishop Poppo von Babenberg incorporated into the Roman gate two superimposed churches, which were only removed 1804-1809 on Napoleon's orders.
The name "Black Gate" is medieval and can be traced back next to the ravages of time on environmental pollution.

Inside are traces of the double church, to see Roman stonework sign and date graffiti; the prospects for the city and valley are remarkable.
