The Palace of Westminster has existed in this location for over a thousand years.
An interpretive sign nearby at Jewel Tower explains the thousand-year-old history of this historic palace, better known now in modern times as the Houses of Parliament.
The sign reads as follows:
THE PALACE OF WESTMINSTER
The Palace of Westminster formed the main residence of the kings and queens of England from the reign of King Edward the Confessor (1042-66) to c. 1512.
It underwent many changes and was almost completely rebuilt after a devastating fire in October 1834. The magnificent new palace is commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its main occupants.
The medieval remains of the palace include Westminster Hall -- started by King William Rufus (1087-1100), but mainly dating to the reign of King Richard II (1377-99) - the Chapel of St. Mary under Croft and the former Chapel of St. Stephen above it (now St. Stephen’s Hall), both much restored, The Cloisters and the Jewel Tower.
