On the grassy roadside in Happy Valley Road a large metal spider stands watch over passing traffic. It could be any type of spider, but we like to think it might be a Mrs Wolf Spider because she is protectively carrying her young babies on her abdomen, a unique trait displayed by female Wolf Spiders.
The sculpture is made of metal scraps and is part of the collection of sculptures spread around the property on the opposite side of the road. This is known as Carlucci Land, an award winning Sculptures Park.
Artist Carl Gifford has a passion for recycling discarded material mostly metal, and has created Carlucci Land. Carlucci Land started with a little imagination over 8 years ago and is continuously growing and fast becoming iconic in Wellington.
The spider and other sculptures can be seen on the roadside at Happy Valley Road, north of Owhiro Bay in Wellington at S 41° 19.680 E 174° 45.490.
