This stucco and metal sign sits beside the Apache Trail, State Highway 88, entering Apache Junction. The sign, a stucco base with a stucco outline of the nearby Superstition Mountains, has a metal likeness of Jacob Waltz at its center. Waltz is depicted leading a burro with gold mining equipment through the desert. The Apache Trail was originally a native American route from the high mountains into the desert. Jacob Waltz claimed to have found a gold mine in the minerally inactive Superstition Mountains. The two have been combined to name the community of Apache Junction.
