The mansion was built in the form of a 2 story Greek temple with 6 Ionic columns on the front façade. It was built in the style of Minard Lafever, who wrote The Modern Builder's Guide and The Beauties of Modern Architecture, which were influential design books in the 1830's.

The house was built for William Kerley Strong, a New York city wool merchant. It is considered one of the finest examples the Greek Revival style in America. Rose Hill is owned by the Geneva Historical Society.
