The sculpture of W.C. Handy is 8 ft. x 2 ft. 10 in. x 3 ft. and stands on a base: approx. 4 ft. 3 in. x 4 ft. x 4 ft. The statue is of a standing male figure, dressed in a suit and holding a trumpet with both hands in front of his chest. His proper right foot is slightly in front of his left. The figure rests on a marble pedestal which sits on a four-stepped platform of cement. The front of the base reads:
