The Pythian Castle was built by the Knights of Pythias. This building accommodated for many years local Knights of Pythias activities on the upper floor while providing commercial space for Arcata businesses below.

Among Pythians, the Arcata. Order, known as the North Star Lodge No. 39, was established in 1876. This Queen Anne style building was built in 1885.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
