"Hartmannswillerkopf, rebaptised “Vieil-Armand” in French by the soldiers of the First World War, is a pyramid-shaped rocky spur in the Vosges mountain range, overlooking the Alsatian Plain of the Haut-Rhin region from the height of its 956 metres.
French and Germans fought fiercely over this observation post for the Alsatian Plain. In 1915 alone, the summit changed hands 4 times. The combats continued throughout the war on this battlefield devastated by shelling, gases and flamethrowers. Its conquest must have ensured the success of the French offensive on the Mulhouse region. The exact number of dead will never be known, but at least 30 000 soldiers perished here. A memorial crypt containing the remains of 12 000 unknown soldiers now pays homage to them."
