Leeds Castle is famed for its beauty and history. Today, it is open to the public for tours, events, and conferences. Your admission ticket gets you inside and on an informative guided tour of the castle, with some free time to explore the beautiful and historic grounds as well.
This historic marker stands in The Chapel, which was created the ensure the repose of the soul of Queen Eleanor, the wife of Edward I.
The interpretive sign reads as follows:
"THE BOARDROOM & BOARDROOM CORRIDOR
When Lady Baillie died in 1974, the castle passed to the Leeds Castle foundation, a charitable trust set up to preserve the castle and its grounds. She wanted the castle to continue to be used. This room and others are often the location for meetings and conferences. The seminar room, which you will see later, was used in 1978 by world leaders for talks that led to the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, later that year. Since then, the castle has hosted many other heads of state and government, including Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2004 for high-level Northern Ireland peace talks.
The red ministerial boxes were those of the first chairman of the foundation, Lord Jeffrey Lloyd (1902-1984) from his days as a Government Minister.
This area of the castle has been rebuilt, as it was burned down by Dutch and French prisoners of war during the 1660s. The damage was not repaired until 1822."
