Lakes Entrance is home to the largest commercial fishing fleet in Victoria and is increasingly used by local and visiting recreational vessels. A wide variety of fishing boats, including squid boats, tuna boats, purse seiners and dredgers all work from this port.
Fishing, on a commercial basis, began in 1878. In the 1960s the first large fishmeal plant in Australia opened in the town.
During the 1970s and 1980s the town's deep sea fishing fleet became one of the most important in Australia. Its main catches are whiting, mullet, gurnard, flathead, gummy sharks, bream, rock lobster and scallops.
The fishing fleet moors inside The Entrance in the still waters of Cunninghame Arm. Lakes Entrance is a popular holiday destination and a pleasant place to visit. You can stroll along the waterfront and watch the activity around the fishing boats, often accompanied by the local pelicans.
The Lakes Entrance Fishing Cooperative in Gippsland, Victoria, has spent half a million dollars on a new processing facility to sell locally caught fish.
Cooperative general manager Dale Sumner said consumers would now have more options to buy Australian caught and processed fish.
"We've had a lot of interest from various entities around Australia that have an idea of being able to access the fish from its source," he said.
"That is also a very powerful marketing advantage that we have in that it’s caught off Lakes Entrance or in the Gippsland lakes and processed here, landed here and then sold from here."
