Where this bridge stands there was a wooden older bridge, built by pasha Skender by the end of the 15th Century. In the old times the river would often destroy the wooden bridges which is what happened with this one. The Austrian administration decided then to build a more solid steel bridge on the location.

The current truss bridge was named after the nearby neighborhood of Skenderija.

Some people believe it was Gustave Eiffel who designed this little bridge as as a result it's also common that people refer to it as Eiffel Bridge.

During the Civil War the bridge was badly damaged and it was reconstructed in 2004.
