The lock is located at the center of Whitehall, toward the northern end and by Main Street.
The lock has a 15.5 ft drop from the level of Lake Champlain to the level of the canal in Whitehall.
The canal here is a modification of Wood Creek. The waterway is set between hills. The Champlain Canal was opened for business in 1819 and was an immediate success. It carried commercial cargo from that time all the way to the 1970s. Today, pleasure boats pass through the canal.
