The GROW Community Garden in Bonners Ferry is very well maintained, and only organic materials are used. Pesticides or herbicides are never allowed in or around the planting areas.
Though we were in Bonners Ferry in late April, the garlic was showing and other vegetables were already planted. There are instructional sign boards showing how to plant garlic, compost, mulch and other information.
The GROW Community Garden in Bonners Ferry is one of several throughout the area. In 2009, this community garden was made possible by Trinity Lutheran Church donation of land set aside for the community garden. The organization also provides education for planting, growing, harvesting, food storage and composting.
There are currently 36 gardening plots with each measuring 4 by 20 feet and available for community members. The garden is maintained by volunteers, schoolchildren, a part-time employee and a member of the Youth Conservation Corps.
The garden group provides fruits and vegetables to a local food bank, and sells some of its produce to purchase flour, rice and sugar for the food bank. The organization also connects to the school system by providing on-site lessons about food sources. GROW! makes food available to the local senior center and to churches or other groups that provide a place for food distribution.
