Antietam National Battlefield consists of 2,743 acres and the Civil War Trust has preserved an additional 240 acres around the battlefield site. Antietam was one of the first five Civil War battlefields to be preserved by the Federal Government on August 30, 1890. Between 1896 and 1898 the U.S. War Department placed over 300 tablets to mark the location of individual regiments during important aspects of the Battle of Antietam which occurred on September 17, 1862. Since 1933 Department of the Interior has maintained the battlefield.

Bloody Lane was the site of heavy fighting. Tablet No. 42 describes the position of Morris' Brigade of the French's Division. It is located near the monument for the 130th Pennsylvania Infantry and is inscribed:

U.S.A.
MORRIS' BRIGADE, FRENCH'S DIVISION
Colonel Dwight Morris, 14th Connecticut, Commanding.
Organization.
14th Connecticut Infantry
108th New York Infantry
130th Pennsylvania Infantry

September 17, 1862.

Morris' Brigade relieved Weber's and took position on the
rise of ground just north of the Bloody Lane; the 108th New
York east of Roulette's Lane, the 14th Connecticut and 130th Penn-
sylvania west of it. Here supported and afterwards reinforced
by Kimball's Brigade, it maintained a severe contest,
losing heavily in killed and wounded. In the latter part of the en-
gagement, the 14th Connecticut was sent to reinforce Richardson's
Division on the left.
No. 42.
