In Amherst, on the Hampshire College campus, is the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.

The museum is located at the southern entrance to Hampshire College, the building is visible to the east. A sign for the museum is at the entrance.

The following is from the museum's web site:

"The mission of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, a non-profit organization in Amherst, Massachusetts, is to inspire a love of art and reading through picture books. The only full-scale museum of its kind in the United States, The Carle collects, preserves, presents, and celebrates picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world. In addition to underscoring the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of picture books and their art form, The Carle offers educational programs that provide a foundation for arts integration and literacy.

The Carle houses more than 13,000 objects, including 6,600 permanent collection illustrations, three art galleries, an art studio, a theater, picture book and scholarly libraries, and educational programs for families, scholars, educators, and schoolchildren. Educational offerings include professional training for educators around the country and four onsite graduate programs in Children's Literature in collaboration with Simmons College."

There are three gallery areas. The first gallery, titled, "Brown Bear Turns 50," was actually open a few days earlier than the stated dates that it is open. This exhibit had displays of Carle's collage works used in illustrating the book and included comments about his techniques.

The second gallery, "Louis Darling: Drawing the Words of Beverly Cleary," had displays about several works that include "The Mouse and the Motorcycle."

The third gallery, "Americana on Parade: The Art of Robert McCloskey," had exhibits featuring works from several books, including "Make Way for Ducklings."

There is an activity room where aspiring young illustrators can attempt creating illustrations with different kinds of art media. There is also an auditorium where other events take place.
